Varieties of Pasta From Around The World

Pasta dishes are so popular that it likely comes as no surprises that varieties of pasta can be found in countries all over the world.

From Italy to China and back again there an countless recipes for pasta in all shapes and sizes, each with a sauce unique to the country of origin.

Many Americans have the general perception that pasta is primarily a European staple with a large influence from Italian cooking. But this can be a somewhat erroneous perception. The truth is that many citizens all over the world add many varieties of pasta to their diets.

Indeed, pasta’s origins most certainly began in Asia – probably China – it is likely an heir to noodles made from hard wheat flour or rice flour. Some say Marco Polo brought pasta to Italy from China. Another theory is that it really originated in the middle east.

Despite pasta’s flourishing in Italy, it remains an important dish in China , though it hasn’t changed significantly from it’s original noodle shape. Chinese noodles were primarily combined with vegetables and oil to make the sauce and later some noodles evolved into a ravioli-like shape that are similar to, but not inspired by, similar dishes in Europe.

Whatever the origins, Italy is today’s largest producer of the most varieties of pasta, and is usually acknowledged at the inspiration for fettuccine, pasta e fagiloi, pasta primavera, pasta carbona and, of course, spaghetti.
